Boyan was born in the Netherlands in 1994 and loves swimming. On holiday in Greece when he was 16, he wanted to watch fish while swimming in the sea. But instead, he saw rubbish – plastic bags and scraps floating everywhere. Boyan was horrified. Did all oceans look like this, he wondered?
He knew he had to do something about it, so at the age of 18 he founded a company and called it The Ocean Cleanup. The name refers to cleaning up the oceans, which is also the company’s goal: to rid the oceans of plastic waste.
Boyan also knew how he would achieve this, because he developed an innovative method in which huge barriers float in the sea and plastic waste is caught by currents. This invention is so good because it works without consuming a lot of energy. It therefore has the potential to remove millions of tonnes of plastic from the oceans in the coming years.
The first successful deployments of his technology took place in the Pacific Ocean, and his team is continuously working to improve the systems and expand them worldwide.
Boyan has shown how young people with innovative ideas can solve global problems. In 2014, Boyan became the youngest recipient of the Champion of the Earth award.
His commitment to environmental protection inspires others to also work towards a better future. It is important to be able to imagine the goal so that you can work on the vision until it becomes reality.
Boyan ist 1994 in den Niederlanden geboren und mag gerne schwimmen. In einem Urlaub in Griechenland, da war er 16, wollte er beim Schwimmen im Meer Fische beobachten. Doch was er stattdessen sah, war Müll – überall schwammen Plastiktüten und Fetzen herum. Boyan war entsetzt. Sahen so alle Meere aus, fragte er sich?
Er wusste, dass er dagegen etwas machen musste und mit 18 Jahren gründete er daher ein Unternehmen und nannte es The Ocean Cleanup. Der Name heißt übersetzt die Ozeansäuberung und das ist auch das Ziel der Firma, nämlich die Ozeane von Plastikmüll zu befreien.
Boyan wusste auch, wie er das schaffen würde, denn er entwickelte eine innovative Methode, bei der riesige Barrieren im Meer treiben und Plastikmüll durch Strömungen aufgefangen wird. Diese Erfindung ist deshalb so gut, weil sie ohne großen Energieaufwand funktioniert. Daher hat sie das Potenzial, in den kommenden Jahren Millionen Tonnen Plastik aus den Meeren zu entfernen.
Die ersten erfolgreichen Einsätze seiner Technologie fanden im Pazifischen Ozean statt, und sein Team arbeitet kontinuierlich daran, die Systeme zu verbessern und weltweit auszuweiten.
Boyan hat gezeigt, wie junge Menschen mit innovativen Ideen globale Probleme lösen können. 2014 wurde Boyan als bisher jüngstem Preisträger die Auszeichnung
Champion of the Earth verliehen. Sein Engagement für den Umweltschutz inspiriert andere, sich ebenfalls für eine bessere Zukunft einzusetzen. Es ist wichtig, sich das Ziel vorstellen zu können, damit man an der Vision so lange arbeiten kann, bis sie Realität wird.
